Faculty researcher Bruno Gonçalves receives the ANACOM-URSI Portugal 2022 Prize

Faculty researcher Bruno Soares Gonçalves received the ANACOM-URSI Portugal 2022 Prize for the work 'Advances, challenges, and future perspectives of microwave reflectometry for plasma position and shape control on future nuclear fusion devices', co-authored with P Varela, A Silva , F da Silva, J Santos, E Ricardo, A Vale, R Luís, Y Nietiadi, A Malaquias, J Belo, J Dias (IPFN/IST), T Franke (Max-Planck -Institut für Plasmaphysik) and W Bie (Institut für Energie- und Klimaforschung, Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH).
The distinction rewards the interdisciplinary work in the development of microwave reflectometry diagnostics for nuclear fusion devices.

The 'URSI Portugal Research Prize' was created by the Portuguese Committee of URSI, sponsored by ANACOM, with the aim of stimulating creativity and rigour in scientific research work in Portugal, through the attribution of a prize to the best work of research carried out in Portugal in the field of radio sciences.
The prize was awarded during the 16th Congress of the Portuguese Committee of URSI, which this year had as its theme ''Quantum communications: what future?''

Faculty members in Stanford's Top 2% lists

The World’s Top 2% Scientists 2022 ranking, according to Stanford University and the publishing group Elsevier, was recently announced. From the list of 200 thousand names, 70 are researchers at Técnico and 2 belong to the scientific area of Plasma Physics, Lasers and Nuclear Fusion (FPLFN): Luís Lemos Alves and Vasco Guerra.

Stanford also published the list of the 2% most influential scientists over their entire careers, which includes 89 Técnico researchers and 2 from FPLFN: Luís O. Silva and Vasco Guerra.

Yohanes Nietiadi receives PhD in Engineering Physics

On 27 October 2022, Dr. Yohanes Nietiadi received his PhD in Engineering Physics with a thesis entitled 'Nuclear technology and engineering studies on reflectometry systems for ITER and DEMO'. His work was supervised by Dr. Raul Luís (IST), Prof. Catarina Vidal (FCT/UNL) and Dr Bruno Gonçalves (IST).

The thesis committee consisted of Prof. Fernando V. Antunes (FCT/UC), Prof. Artur Malaquias (IST), Dr. Lorenzo Boccaccini (KIT, Germany), Dr. Raul Luís (IST), and Prof. Luís l. Alves (IST, President).
